This module introduces students to three of the major thinkers in nineteenth- and twentieth-century German thought, all of whom have exerted a global impact: Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud. Topics explored will include Marx's theories of political economy, ideology, and culture; Nietzsche's philosophy of language and his critique of religion; and Freud's ideas about the unconscious in their relation to both psychoanalytic practice and to broader theories of culture.
