This module examines the cultural history of France through its museums, from the opening of the Musée central des arts in the Louvre Palace (1793), to the inauguration of the Louvre Abu Dhabi in 2017. It explores the idea of the museum as a space where symbolic value and cultural discourse are built. Students will be introduced to the concept of 'patrimoine' (heritage) through the study of a range of artworks and artifacts in (and outside of) major French collections.
