Browse Hierarchy EAL4720: Expand Your Vocabulary in English

This module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to expand their vocabulary in English. By accessing corpora in the multi-media language labs, we explore the way vocabulary is used in different media, genres and registers - from argot to legal English. Students examine and assess the utility of collocations, and also expand their ability to memorise vocabulary by developing techniques for building word families, and by exploring synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and semantic fields. In addition, students practise the skill of deducing meaning from context when faced with unknown words or phrases in listening and reading texts. Students work under teacher supervision, individually, in small groups and pairs, and project work allows them to expand their vocabulary according to their own personal needs and preferences.
