This module is offered to students at levels 4,5,6,7 and responds to their linguistic and discipline specific needs in terms of writing. Students joining this module are already at IELTS level 6.5 /7. This equates to B2/C1 on the CEFR framework, and Queen Mary currently benchmarks this to level 5/6 on the NQF framework. The module furthers the development of writing which was started in Excellence in Writing 1. The module content consists of written texts which students currently use in their degree programmes, and, while these texts change according to the disciplines of the class, include genres that students may be expected to deliver during their degree programmes, such as: research papers, academic articles, student essays, student exam answers, student dissertations and theses. The module is needs-driven, and the syllabus is therefore necessarily flexible. However, the basic syllabus is likely to include:Overview of the construction of knowledge in written form in various disciplines, Consideration of text as discussion with practice in written discussion, The concept of voice - the recognition of voice in reading and the development of voice in writing, The conventions of passive voice and impersonal register - recognition and use, Strategies for writing in academia including further work on coherence, rheme and theme analysis and use, cohesion and anaphoric reference, substitution and ellipsis, conjunction, Overview of text from reading to writing including: titles, introductions, development and conclusions, Lexical awareness - using dictionaries and thesaurus, Literature review, synthesising sources, using references and acknowledging sources including on-line materials, Reading, unpacking and answering examination questions, Writing as continual process - writing practice in each class and/or as written assignment between classes.
