This course module will survey and analyse key aspects of the interaction between Russian and East European émigré and exilic cultures and Western culture and thought in the 20th century (French, German, American). Particular fields to be considered include the fine arts, literature, cultural history, and social and political thought. Drawing on works by a range of Russian and East European artists and thinkers, we will explore the legacy of these key figures in their fruitful dialogue with Western culture and thought, and how Western culture responded to the challenges and opportunities of this encounter.
