This course examines the Russian short story as a genre that articulates the relationship between the self and society. We shall analyse the intrinsic narrative and thematic complexity of works by Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Andreev. Topics to discuss include self-fashioning and fate, grotesque visions of self-loss, the myth of St Petersburg, social and sexual otherness, history and individuality, love and death, time and memory.
