This module investigates the ways in which 'China' has been imagined, invented, and instrumentalised by non-Chinese cultures over the last millennium. Drawing on a wide range of literary traditions, including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, and Japanese, this module interrogates not only how 'China' has taken on meaning across various languages and cultures, but also how its meaning and potential has changed over time. Genres to be studied include travelogues, drama, fiction, poetry, and prose.
