This year-long module introduces students to key cultural, literary, and artistic works that have shaped the image and identity of Paris from the 19th century to the present and asks crucial questions about the changing place of the city as the `centre' of the francophone world. Beginning with the aftermath of the French Revolution and the transformation of Paris in the 19th century, the course will explore how the city has been represented and re-imagined in response to significant cultural shifts and challenges, both from within the city and without. Students will engage with a range of literary texts, visual sources, and historical contexts, and conduct site visits to Parisian museums and cultural landmarks which provide tangible insights into the artistic and cultural expressions studied in class.
