Browse Hierarchy SNU213: Essential Biochemistry for Medicine
The module covers the structure and function of biomolecules, such as amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleotides and vitamins and introduce the basics of enzyme catalysis and kinetics. The module will emphasise on aspects of biochemistry relevant to medicine and explain how the human body works as a chemical system in health and disease. Indicative focus points are bioenergetics and oxidative metabolism, digestion and absorption of nutrients, metabolism of glucose, carbohydrate storage and synthesis, the TCA cycle, oxidative metabolism of lipids, biosynthesis and storage of fatty acids, biosynthesis of cholesterol and steroids, biosynthesis and degradation of amino acids, protein turnover, glucose homeostasis and fuel metabolism, regulation of hydrogen concentration, oxygen transport and bone metabolism.
