This module provides an introduction to the action of medicinal drugs including an understanding of the basic principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. The module will look at major drug classes, and examine how drugs elicit their effects by interaction with specific targets and the factors that control (i) how drugs reach those targets; (ii) the duration of action; (iii) individual variation in the response to drugs. Drug treatment of major medical conditions will be discussed.
