The module will provide a concise introduction to the key issues of neurobiology, beginning with basic cellular electrophysiology and synaptic transmission and moving on to reflexes and simple networks of neurons. Students will build on this knowledge to begin to study basic vertebrate brain architecture and functional neuroanatomy, before moving on to systems neurobiology and an overview of mammalian motor and sensory systems, with particular reference to experimental and neurological evidence. The module will also consider molecular neurobiology, and the structures and functional properties of voltage-gated ion channels and channelopathies - diseases caused by mutational or autoimmune-related defects in ion channels.
