The module provides a fundamental introduction to developmental biology and introduces the student to human embryology. The module looks to cover at a cellular level how the fundamental processes in developmental biology have been discovered and/or understood in model organisms and how these occur in the human embryo. Where appropriate, this may include a rudimentary introduction to the genes involved although examples of detailed pathways will be explored in Y3 modules. Practicals will familiarise students with standard laboratory techniques in cell and developmental biology using model organisms to illustrate the role of fundamental cellular components in a number of key cell biological processes.
