The concept of the cell progresses to an introduction to contemporary microscopy. Following an introduction to basic biochemistry, the basic organization of eukaryotic cells is introduced including structure and function of membranes and the nature and function of the different organelles. The cytoskeleton is introduced together with how it allows for cell movement and contraction in specialized cells, and how cells communicate. The diversity of cell junctions and the organisation of cells into tissues is presented ending with an introduction to stem cells.
