This module is an introduction to databases and their language systems in theory and practice. The main topics covered are: - Principles, components, architecture and purpose of database management systems. - Modelling techniques (e.g. Entity-Relationship Model and Relational Model) used in the design and construction of database systems. - Implementation of databases using relational DB system (e.g. Relational Algebra) and object-relational methodologies and concepts (e.g. Enhanced Entity Relationship Model). - SQL, the main relational database language. - Competence and awareness regarding social, legal and ethical issues including knowledge about data protection acts. - Advanced topics including data warehousing (business intelligence) and NoSQL.
