This module focuses on how to conduct empirical research on quantitative data, with a focus on language data. You will get hands-on experience in working with a variety of issues involved in conducting original research, including understanding the scientific method, designing a project, collecting different types of linguistic data, doing quantitative analysis, and visual data presentation. The best way to learn research methods is to practice them, so students will do regular practical assignments. They will also be introduced to basic data management tools, useful across a range of careers. The module will equip students with independent research skills as well as general transferrable skills such as how best to collect data to answer a specific question, how to understand and conduct statistical and other analysis, and how to interpret data patterns. The module is conducted as a seminar: active participation is expected and encouraged.
