How do you speak to someone who does not want to listen? This module studies the devices and strategies deployed by advocates in order to address those in power, whether this be in the form of criticism of power, or an appeal to power's mercy, or advice given to someone in power. 'Advocacy' is understood broadly to include not only those who speak in court, but also those who communicate via written texts. The devices and strategies that the course identifies come from two main traditions: first, the practice and pedagogy of rhetoric; and second, the genre of comedy. Skilled advocates are able to deploy these devices and strategies to indirectly, or in a veiled way, speak truth to power. The course ranges from Ancient Greek and Roman texts through to contemporary examples.
