Browse Hierarchy LAW5013U: Family Law

This module is being offered as a Level 5 elective module. Its purpose is to give students a good grounding into the key principles in Family Law. These encompass the law in relation to adults - Nullity of marriage, Divorce, Financial Provision and Domestic Abuse (Semester A) and the law in relation to children (Semester B). In terms of the topics in Semester B, the focus will be on private law disputes - Parenthood, Best Interests principle, Section 8 Children Act 1989 orders, Children's Rights (consenting or refusing medical treatment), with some insight into the involvement of local authorities in the lives of children and their families. Students will work with a range of statutes, as well as case law. They will also develop an understanding of the fast-paced nature of this area of the law.
