This module provides an opportunity for students to explore in detail various contemporary global health challenges, including infodemics, pandemics, war, climate change and colonialism. To analyse these challenges the module introduces students to the concept of framing and also 'wicked problems' and these concepts are applied to the case studies during seminars. The module is interdisciplinary and will interrogate global health challenges from various perspectives and disciplines, including cognitive linguistics, media studies, public health, anthropology, political economy and international relations. As with all academic study, 'wicked' global health challenges are evolving against the backdrop of a 21st century phenomenon of `fake news¿. In an era of uncertainty about `facts¿, and hostility towards `truth¿, the ability to marshal appropriate quantitative and qualitative data, and employ critical thinking has never been more important.
