Parental Advisory! Explicit...Lectures? This module charts the long history of censorship in the America. It begins before the Revolution with the celebrated Zenger Case of 1735 (which offered truth as a defence against charges of libel), and continues through the Gag Rule 1836-1844 (banning discussion of slavery in Congress), the Comstock Law of 1873 (prohibiting circulation of contraceptives through the mail), and the Smith Act of 1940 (which made membership of the Communist Party a criminal offence), right up to Donald Trump's Twitter ban. Restrictions on dissent during wartime, obscene material, Hollywood, and hate speech will all be examined, as we explore how Americans have reconciled the practice of censorship with the First Amendment's protection of free speech and a free press. *You must be 18 or over to take this module*
