The British Monarchy is often associated with tradition and stability, yet its history has been turbulent, contested and scandalous. It has survived executions, abdications and changes of dynasty; it has faced revolution abroad and unrest at home, and has adapted to the emergence of democracy, the mass media and the rise and fall of the British Empire. This module explores the history of the British Monarchy from the execution of Charles I during the English Civil War to the prorogation crisis of 2019, 'Megxit' and the reign of Charles III today. It will interrogate the monarchy's changing power and purpose, its responses to scandals, societal shifts and public opinion, and its history of adaptation to changes within Britain and the wider world. Working with Historic Royal Palaces (responsible for Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, Tower of London, Kew Palace and Banqueting House), we will facilitate students in making full use of London's unique range of royal buildings, potentially including palace site visits and curator visits.
