Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya (1263-1328) is one of the most remarkable and controversial thinkers in Islamic history. Of restricted influence during his lifetime, in the twentieth century he has been championed by revivalist salafi groups who call for a return to the pristine golden age of the Prophet, and, more recently, his writings are also being widely cited by radical groups to justify acts of terrorism and armed struggle. This module offers an overview of Ibn Taymiyya's life, work and legacy. We will examine the political and social context of his biography in Mamlluk Damascus, and read translated excerpts from Ibn Taymiyya's key theological, legal and philosophical writings. We will then aim to explain his widespread popularity and influence at the beginning of the 21st century.
