Can art change the world for the better? Over the last two hundred years, many British artists have used their creativity in the hope of doing just that. Taught by art activism expert, Chloe Ward, this module will explore radical art in Britain from the Victorian period to the present. Module topics range from the anti-industrial work of the Arts and Crafts Movement to more recent political interventions by Sonia Boyce of the Black British Arts Movement, Tracy Emin of the Young British Artists (YBAs), and guerrilla street artist Banksy. Field trips will take students to London museums and archives (to potentially include the William Morris Gallery, The Whitechapel Art Gallery, and Tate Modern), allowing students to view activist art first hand and see how artists have worked to protest injustice and solve some of society's most intractable problems.
