In this module we explore how Western imperialism and ideas of racial difference have shaped the modern world, even as they were fiercely contested. Going beyond the conventional historical narratives, we will investigate how this history has been written ¿ and how it has in many instances been erased. We will examine the connections between imperialism, capitalism and science, considering how power operates through categories of race but also gender, sexuality, class and caste. Students will explore the critical vocabularies developed by colonised peoples to resist empire in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East, following the legacies of these struggles to the present day.
