This module will examine the lives of iconic Londoners, from Shakespeare to rock star David Bowie, from Charles Dickens to the controversial contemporary artist Tracey Emin. It will be taught largely through a series of on-site seminars in which students will visit key parts of the city connected to these icons, including the Olympic Park, the Tate Britain and Tate Modern art galleries, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Charles Dickens' home and museum. Via these illustrious Londoners, students will explore such themes as the creation of London theatre, the contribution of the city to literature and rock n'roll, and the Young British Artists' Movement. The course will include a two-hour walking tour of a myriad places of historical interest in central London.
