A crucible of modernity and capital of an expanding empire, Victorian London was a unique metropolis unlike anywhere on the planet. Inspiring writers like Charles Dickens, it was also a place of great extremes - of glittering wealth, but also of dire poverty. Alongside work in the classroom, we learn by walking the city and visiting key sites to examine how class, gender and 'race' shaped social understandings of the metropolis and the everyday experiences of those who inhabited it.
