Browse Hierarchy ESH6081: Love Poetry in the Medieval and Early Modern Worlds: A Global Perspective
Cultures across the globe expressed love, affection, friendship, sexual desire, longing and loss through poetry. We will embark on an exciting journey of emotions by taking a thematic approach to our reading each week, analysing topics such as erotic and platonic love, love of nature, animals and the self. Our aim is a wide-ranging exploration of the cultural manifestations of love from poets representing various languages across India, Middle East, continental Europe and the British Isles. The selection of poems will not follow a specific canon but will reflect the multi-lingual and multi-cultural reality of the medieval and early modern worlds. Female voices will find ample representation. All non-English poems will be made available in translation from reputable editions.
