This module provides an opportunity to study the representation and mediation of trans experience across multiple genres, formats and histories. We can look at trans lives through the lens of health care, the criminal justice system, identity politics, mass media, performance, literature and culture, for example. The discourse around trans experience is shifting and developing, which means that authoritative positions and established canons cannot be discerned or imposed. In response, this module gives you agency in deciding how to address the issues surrounding trans creation and representation in literature, media, performance and culture: you will act as co-creators with the teaching staff, making collective and individual decisions about what it means to 'teach trans lives', including designing aspects of the assessment.
