This module will introduce you to tales of mythical heroes and heroines, fantastical adventures and quests, and stories in which the real and the unreal collide. From battles with monsters to perilous journeys, and from defiant female saints to tales featuring supernatural beings such as fairies and werewolves, we will ask how these narratives reflect and critique the ideas, anxieties, and ethics of their times. We will also ask why they remain so appealing to writers and creatives today. These stories were written in the Middle Ages, but they will surprise you. We will explore how they subvert expectations, challenge ideals, push the boundaries of genre, and test the limits of the human.
