In this module the most important characterisation techniques used for quantifying and visualising material structure will be introduced, with both their theoretical principles and practical operation discussed. A hierarchical approach will be used, where methods probing smaller length scales (e.g., molecular) will be covered before studying larger length scales ¿ this is designed to parallel, for pedagogical purposes, the delivery of materials engineering and chemistry in the 1st year. The practical implementation of each method, the strengths, and drawbacks of the methods for different types of materials, and the techniques to evaluate data from each method will be studied, with summative coursework designed to develop the students¿ skills, particularly in the last point.
