This module will study the principles of sustainable finance, exploring the role played by financial markets and institutions in the transition to a sustainable economy. In the first part of the module, we will discuss the environment as a global public good, the prospects for using financial instruments and institutions to mitigate global externalities, and various perspectives on corporate social responsibility. In the second part, we will study the benefits and risks of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) investment, sustainable financial products, and recent developments in environmental regulation. Other topics may include the measurement of climate risk, investor preferences for sustainability, and greenwashing.
