The module is an introduction to the core concepts in finance and covers the economic principles underlying the working of national and international financial institutions. It introduces the theory and operation of financial systems from an economist¿s viewpoint. The stress is on financial instruments and markets in which they are traded. Students are expected to gather a good understanding of the functioning of the financial system. They are expected to learn applying an economics perspective to the study of financial assets and institutions, and to form a coherent view of the disparate variables in financial activity, markets, and their governance as well as to understand these in the context of financial crises.
