This module examines the current and emerging broadband communications techniques employed in local, access and backbone networks. Particular emphasis will be focused on the fundamentals of propagation of light through optical fibres, fibre geometry and characterizations, design of optical links, nonlinear optical phenomena in optical fibres and short pulse propagation in fibres. The module also discusses the requirements and challenges for future deployment of broadband and fibre optics communications systems.
