Intellectual Property (IP) Laws aim to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish, by striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest. This course examines the rights that apply to different areas of technology and commerce through IP laws such as copyrights and related rights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, industrial design rights and confidential information, describing general principles and schemes for protection and the scope of such rights. It then considers challenges to the existing IP laws and emerging issues from the impact of new communication technologies, such as the internet and proposals to address such challenges.
