This module is an introduction to the representation, analysis and processing of digital multimedia. Topics include sampling and quantisation, elements of human visual perception, colour models, image and video representations, lossless and lossy compression techniques, JPEG and MPEG standards, object-based multimedia, and multimedia networking. Emphasis is placed on understanding the underlying principles and engineering aspects of multimedia systems. The module is delivered through a combination of lectures, discussions, and hands-on lab sessions.
