This module engages with performance and visual art in South Asia in the 20th and 21st centuries. You will look at paintings, photography, theatre and performance to explore how their development has been influenced by and has in turn informed the unfolding of political events in the Indian subcontinent. Case studies may include Amrita Sher-Gil, Inder Salim, Maya Rao, Rajyashri Goody, Girls at Dhabas and Raqs Media Collective. Topics include art¿s engagement with modernism, nationalism, religious fundamentalism, military occupation, displacement, ethnic strife, and gendered and caste violence.
