Browse Hierarchy COM5212: The European Gothic: Tales of Shock and Awe
Until recently the Gothic has been understood and studied as an essentially English invention which subsequently spread to other cultures. This module will challenge this narrative by exploring the transnational (and translational) origins and development of Gothic fiction, and will include true stories, short fiction and novels from a range of European literatures (such as English, French, German, Russian). It will encourage students to reflect on the strange but enduring appeal of these tales of dark and violent desires.
