Who's afraid of new media? The module explores the senses of fear, uncanniness and the shifting realities that modern media forms often seem to produce, and asks why those feelings come about. What questions have new media, especially now digital media and AI, posed about the borders between humans and machines, and the nature of humanity and reality themselves? How have artists, writers, theorists and media producers articulated those questions, and what can we learn from their work? Reading cultural and theoretical texts by theorists from Sigmund Freud to Donna Haraway, alongside authors and artists from Bram Stoker to Ursula Le Guin, we will also experiment with new media forms ourselves.
