This module examines a range of twentieth and twenty-first century works from across the globe that explore the relationship between learning and power in various guises (for example, the individual, social and political). The module has two central aims: Firstly, it allows you to compare texts (written and visual) across different cultural contexts in order to develop your skills of textual analysis, including close reading, essay and commentary writing, copy editing, researching and referencing. These skills will be central to all other modules taken over the course of your degree. Secondly, it offers you the opportunity to claim your own space in the educational sphere, reflecting on your position as an individual learner in order to develop a greater understanding of the ways in which you can achieve empowerment through education. You will consider your learning experiences to date as well as explore your expectations as to what higher education can provide in terms of your future career plans in relation to your personal values.
