The module will examine the substantive and procedural law relating to the EU regulation of GIs for wine (Regulation 1308/2013 establishing a common organisation of the markets in agricultural products) including the definition and eligibility of geographical names for registration of wines; control or inspection obligations; enforcement and; the inter-relationship of GIs with trade marks for wine. Complementing the legal rules for the registration and protection of wine GIs, the module course will evaluate the underlying rationale of the rules protecting wine GIs as relating to the historical and cultural aspects of wine production in Europe.
