This course examines how we should design, finance, and regulate corporations in order to align their incentives with sustainability issues in general and climate change in particular. The course will discuss: 1) the difficulties in defining what activities are 'sustainable' from a regulatory point of view; 2) the role of corporations in addressing climate change and other sustainability issues and how that role is limited by the boundaries of the corporation's impact as well as the boundaries of its responsibility; 3) the impact of sustainability on the types of finance tools available to corporations and the regulatory interventions in this area; 4) the regulation of the energy sector and how this impacts the incentives of energy companies to tackle climate change.
